YOUR FREE COUNTING LESSON

Make a three-space supply mat

Count one object at a time. You lead; your child shows their thinking.

Plan about 10 minutes, plus adult preparation. Stop earlier if needed. No account or printer required.

1

Get ready

Gather: One sheet of paper, a pencil and three large, safe objects such as socks or wooden spoons. Avoid small parts and sharp objects.

Adult preparation: An adult draws three large circles in a row on the paper. Keep the objects on the table. No cutting is needed.

2

Gather & predict

Place the three objects beside the paper. Ask: “How many spaces do we have? Do you think there is a space for every object?”

3

Make it together

Move one object into each circle. Say one number for each object as it moves: 1, 2, 3. Let your child point or move; you can do the writing.

4

Ask & explain

Ask: “How many objects altogether? How do you know?” Then spread the objects farther apart without adding or removing any. Ask whether the total changed.

5

Try one without showing the answer

Put the same three objects in a new row. Without counting for your child, ask: “How many are here? Can you show me?”

Parent answer & what to notice

There are 3. Moving or spreading the objects does not change how many there are. Note whether your child counted each object once or needed you to model it.

A coached answer is useful practice. It is not the same as explaining independently.

6

Choose the next small step

If it felt hard: Use just two objects and two circles. Model touching each object once; then invite your child to try. Stop before frustration.

If it felt comfortable: Later today or another day, try three different large objects. If that is comfortable, add a fourth circle and object.

Write one private note: “Today we tried ___. My child showed ___. I helped by ___.” No upload needed.
